Depending on the season, Natural offers an even bigger treat with its combination of mango or strawberry ice cream (only available in these two flavours), freshly cut pieces of the respective fruit, and a dollop of fresh cream. Absolutely sinful!

While the parlour can get a little crowded at times, especially during summers, you could perhaps pick up a cone or cup of ice cream (be patient, as, at times, the queue is rather long), and enjoy it over a stroll, or order it (it's free home delivery!) and have it in the comfort of your home. Take your pick - single or double scoop, fresh waffle cone or the typical one or just in a cup. The tubs are available in a quantity of half kilo. The reasonable price of the ice creams is one more reason why it can be enjoyed by anyone - from a college student to someone making big bucks.

As you read this, I am somewhere in the wilds near Wallace, Idaho at a campground without internet access.  We are here because hubby is going 4-wheeling with his ORV club, and I am taking a "reading" vacation.  I have loaded up my Kindle with more books than I could ever read in a week, so I am reading and relaxing in the camper and cooking when I have to.

Verily unlike the common traditional cakes, those are served in the wedding generally consist of many layers and also elaborate design. Online Diwali Sweets Make Life Easy

The great epic of Ramayana contains the most popular legend associated with the meaning behind the festival of Deepavali. It is said that when the epitome of human virtue 'Maryada Purushottam' Sri Rama returned to Ayodhya after 14 years of unfair exile which he accepted only to honour his elders and thereby set an example to human society for all times to come, the citizens of Ayodhya lit rows of earthen diyas to welcome their rightful ruler back. His brother Bharata had ruled Ayodhya for these fourteen years as his agent and had duly installed Rama's Charan padukas on the throne of Ayodhya!

Another legend associated with one of the days of Diwali is related with the day after Dhanteras, popularly known as 'Chhoti Diwali'. Despite Lord Indra intervening in the process, Lord Krishna proved his supremacy in putting an end to the demon Naraka on this day. Not only was Lord Krishna the Divine Advisor to Arjuna and the Pandavas in the epic battle of righteousness versus evil represented by the Kauravas, He - as the incarnation of Lord Vishnu the Preserver - is also the vanquisher of Narakasura. This event from Krishna's holy life is commemorated on 'Chhoti Diwali'.

We can see how Lord Krishna and Sri Rama, both considered avatars (incarnations) of Lord Vishnu are inextricably intertwined in the traditions and foundations of the most important festival of all in the Hindu calendar - the Holy Festival of Deepawali. Both the Hindu Gods are amongst the most respected and most popular Gods in Hinduism. They are worshipped in almost every Hindu home and remembered in times of need as well as trial. 'Hey Ram' and 'Radhe Krishna' are two of the most common phrases one can hear in religious Hindu homes.

Children eagerly look forward to Chhoti Diwali when the flow of gifts to and fro from friends and relatives turns into a torrent since only a day is left for Diwali. Almond White Brownies with Buttermilk Glaze-Saturday Sweet

Since I posted about making your own buttermilk, I thought I should share some ways to use it.  Almond White Brownies with Buttermilk Glaze are bar cookie made eggs as the leavening giving them a brownie texture.  A hot buttermilk glaze is poured over the brownies and allowed to seep in making them almost a candy.

These are heavy with almond flavor.  If you are not an almond lover, replace the almond flavoring with vanilla and use pecans or walnuts for the nuts or leave them out.



Almond White Brownies with Buttermilk Glaze
1 c. melted butter
2 c. sugar
4 eggs,  at room temperature
2 t. almond extract
2 c.flour
1/2 c. sugar
1/4 c. buttermilk
1/4 c. butter
1/2 t. baking soda
1 t. almond extract

Combine the melted and slightly cooled butter with the sugar until well mixed.  Beat in the eggs, one at a time, beating until well combined each time.  Add the flour and mix well.  Stir in the almonds.  Pour batter into a well-greased 9x13-inch baking pan.  Bake at 350 degrees 25 to 30 minutes.  Remove from oven and let cool slightly.  While bars are baking, make glaze.  Combine sugar, buttermilk, butter and baking soda in a medium saucepan.  Place over medium heat and,stirring, bring to a boil.  Turn heat down and boil 5 to 6 minutes until thick and syrupy.  Stir often.  Remove from heat and add almond extract.  With a fork or wooden pick poke holes all over the top of the brownies.  Pour the glaze over the top of the brownies and spread to cover evenly.  Let glaze sink in and brownies cool completely.  Cut into bars.  Makes about 36.  Keep stored in a zip-top bag so brownies do not dry out.

Wizard of Oz Birthday Party

This Wizard of Oz Birthday party has been a long time coming.  I started with it being a graduation party, but we missed that due to the Colorado Wild Fires and ended up just using it to celebrate the graduates birthday since we had already started all the preparations.


It ended up being a simple but fun affair and I wanted to show you the sweet treats and ideas that we came up with.

I started by using the Photo Booth Backdrop that I showed you how to make a while ago.  I use it as the  basis for all my backgrounds.  It's so quick and easy to assemble and take with me wherever I need to go to throw a party.  I put a blue tablecloth on the back and used my Yellow Brick Road pennant banner to welcome the guests to the Emerald City dessert table.

In the center of the table, I placed my Yellow Brick Road plastic canvas table runner.  On the table runner, Dorothy and her friends are on our cupcake toppers and are walking the yellow brick road to get to the Emerald city sucker stand in the back.  The sucker stand has 3 inch whirly pops on it for each guest.

To the left of the Yellow Brick Road, we had "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead" Ding Dongs.  Since you can't find ding dongs anymore (although I'm hoping the new Hostess will have them out soon...YUM!) I found a Homemade Ding Dong recipe by Bean Town Baker.  I wrapped them up in silver foil to give them the original Ding Dong look and placed them on a yellow plate that I found in the summer section at Walmart.
Next to the Ding Dongs, we had "Munchkin" Donut Holes and Rice Krispie Treat Chocolate sunflower treats.

On the other side of the table, we had "Glinda the Good Witch" Chocolate covered Pretzel wands.  I covered the pretzels with chocolate and then with mini M&Ms.  These were a definite hit.  Then we had "Lions, Tigers, & Bears" chocolate animal crackers.  In the back we covered rice krispie treats with our yellow milkies to make Yellow Brick Road Bricks.

One of my pet peeves is to go to a party or potluck and not have any idea what you are eating.  So we continued our table card tradition and labeled each of the foods with fun and informative treats.  Each of the Wizard of Oz Character tables cards have a blue background and a different character on it.  You can use these as food cards or name cards or game labels...just about anything.

We ended up playing Pin the Heart on the Tin Man, but I was so busy that I forgot to take pictures of us doing it.  We also played a Wizard of Oz bingo game and a few others.  We ended up giving out the Ruby Red Slipper Jelly Belly treats as prizes for each of the games we played.  That was a big hit with all the girls who won.

As a party favor to all our guests, we gave out the Wizard of Oz Tic Tac Toe games that we made and the Yellow Brick Road candy toppers as parting gifts.  I think the kids all had a good time and I am so excited to have been a part of this special day!

5 mistakes to avoid if you want the perfect pancakes

Most people will say experience. It takes some repetition to master the art of the perfect pancakes. The best part about making pancakes is that they are very easy to make. The emergence of convenient pancake mixes ensures that you can make pancakes very easily at the comfort of your home. All you have to do to get the batter is just add some water and voila! However, there are some common mistakes that people make when they want to make these. We are all human and it is understandable. But if you want perfect ones from the first one to the last one, you should ensure that you eliminate the mistakes.

The first mistake is that people often cook the pancakes as soon as they make the mix. Making the right pancake demands a degree of patience. Jumping to make it doesn't give the starch room to grow. The air bubbles don't release the gluten either. For the best results you should leave the batter to set for about 3 hours. Most chefs recommend that you leave the batter to set for a minimum of one hour. Ensure that you leave the batter in the fridge for that duration.

Another mistake that most people make is leaving lumps. Surely there are some people who prefer their pancakes lumpy. However, this lumpiness comes at the expense of quality. For one to get good results, they must ensure that they eliminate all the lumps in the batter. This means that you will have to whisk the mix until the right consistency is achieved. The mixing consistency ensures that the gluten is released from the flour and joins completely with the mix.

The third mistake that most amateur chefs make is cooking the pancake either in hot or very cold temperature. Considering that there is no right way to tell the right temperature for cooking pancakes, you will have to rely on what you see. To this end you have to use a drop of water in order to ascertain the temperature. If the pan is too cold, the water drop takes its time before it evaporates. If the water drop evaporates quickly, the temperature is very hot. When you have either result, you should adjust the temperature accordingly.

Fourthly, most amateurs don't season the pan thoroughly. This results in the pancakes burning or being overcooked. Hence, you should pour a drop of oil on the pan to season it. There are alternative seasonings. You can choose a seasoning that has the flavour that you want. It is also recommended that you use a non-stick pan.

The final mistake is that you use too much batter. If you want a thin pancake, you should use one tablespoon of batter mix on the pan. For thicker pancakes, you can use half a ladleful to get that thick pancake you desire.

Avoiding the above mistakes ensures that you get the best pancakes (interesting information for you could turn to be that the Danish term is pandekager ) on your plate.

How to Fill a Template in Gimp with a Custom Background

Have you ever been so excited to have learned to do something and then later when you went back to do it again, you forgot how?  This is how I am with a lot of my computer projects.  I am not the most computer savvy person around (despite having done this for several years now.)  It's not usually until I need to do something that I learn how.  Otherwise, I'm pretty clueless.


Long ago, I learned how to fill a template in Photoshop.  Now, three computers later, I don't have Photoshop anymore.  And I'm not paying the huge price tag to repurchase it.  So instead, I've been slowly teaching myself how to use Gimp.  Haven't heard of Gimp?  It's a free image manipulation program that works much the same as Photoshop...and you heard me, it's FREE.

So, before I forget how to do this again, I'm sharing this tutorial on how to fill a template with a custom background in Gimp.  In this case, I'm making a Yellow Brick Road alphabet for my Wizard of Oz party.

To begin with, you need to download the Gimp program and open it.  You can find it HERE.

How to open a template in Gimp
To fill the shape you want to use, you will need to open the file in Gimp by going to "File" in the upper left hand corner and clicking "Open."  Find where you have saved your template and open it.  If you like, you can find the Blank Alphabet file that I used HERE.

Next, you need to prepare it to be used in your design by deleting the white in the background.  To do this, go to "Layers" and then "Transparency".  This will allow you to "Add Alpha Channel." (In this picture example, I've already done that so the link isn't highlited, but it will be for you.)

To delete the white in the background, you will need to use your "Fuzzy Select" tool.  (You can do this by clicking the magic wand tool in the toolbox or by clicking "Tools" and the "Selection Tools" and then "Fuzzy Select Tool."

Once you have this tool, click the area that is white and needs to be removed.  You will see a dotted line highlighting the area.  Now either click "Delete" or go to "Edit" and then click "Clear."  This will make the area into a Checkerboard background to show there is no color left.

Now to make a custom background in Gimp, you need to find a background that you like.  I designed up a Yellow Brick Road background image and saved it as a jpg file.  To use it as a custom background in Gimp, you will need to open the file in Gimp and open it, just like you did your alphabet letter or other design.

Now you need to either right click or go to "Edit" and "Copy" your background.

Go back to your template (or alphabet letter) and find your pattern in your "Layers and Channels toolbar."  The first block should have your clipboard graphic in it.  In this case, you can see my Yellow Brick Road pattern.  Click on it to select.

Now "Fuzzy Select" the area that you want to fill.  In this case, it's my alphabet letter.  Right click on it or go to the top of the screen to "Edit".  Now click on "Fill with Pattern."
How to save a file in Gimp
Your template should now be filled with your background graphic.  So you need to save this.  Go to "File" and "Save As" Find where you want to save your graphic.  REMEMBER where you save it.  (That's usually one of the hardest things for me.)  In this case, I created a file called "Yellow Brick Road Alphabet" in my pictures file.

You can see that my file is trying to save it as "A.jpg" in the "Name" area at the top.  To keep the file transparent, you need to save it as a different file extension.  My favorite is a "PNG" file.  So name your file.  In mine, I named it as "Yellow Brick Road A.png"  Be sure to add the (dot) png at the end so it knows how to save.  Now go ahead and click save or "Enter" and just keep hitting "Enter until it's saved completely and returns you to your file.

Now your done with your template.  Depending upon what you want to do now, you have a transparent file that can be added to any other graphic or file to complete your project.

  I made a pennant banner with mine by using Printmaster.  (I'm a huge fan of it and use this program for most of my designing.)  I am excited with how this turned out and can't wait to add it to my Wizard of Oz party table.  Plus, maybe now, I'll remember how to do this for next time.

What I love about this recipe is that it is a way to fancy up good, ole, cheap pork n' beans.  Of course, it has bacon because everything is better with bacon.  The recipe as written includes ground beef so it is more of main dish to my thinking.  For a side dish, I would probably leave the ground beef out.

Cracker making is pretty easy.  Since I can't find chocolate graham crackers any more, it is nice to have a recipe so I can make my own.

Wizard of Oz Cupcake Topper Printables

Life has been super crazy the last few weeks.  Our town was threatened by the Colorado Wild Fires on several sides and we've been hunkering down waiting to see if we need to evacuate at any moment from any of the 4 local fires.  That has kept me very close to home and the kids and not crafting as much as I would like.


But things have calmed down on the fire front and I'm back to showing off my Wizard of Oz party ideas.  Today I'm sharing with you two new cupcake topper ideas that I had.  (I couldn't decide which I liked better, so I did them both.)

The first design is much like the other princess cupcake toppers we have shared in the past.  They are designed to be the upper half of the characters so that the cupcake will be their "dress".  I really like this style as it really highlights the cupcake toppers themselves and has the cupcakes as "dressing."

The only problem that I have with this style, is unlike our other cupcake toppers, the Wizard of Oz toppers are pretty complicated to cut out.  Dorothy, Glinda, and the Wicked Witch of the West all have complicated cuts and it takes a little while and lots of patience to cut these out.

If you have that time or a cutting machine that will cut these, then they are TOTALLY worth it because they are the cutest Wizard of Oz cupcake topper printables.

If you don't have that type of patience, I have made these cupcake toppers too.  They are simple 2 inch circles that can easily be cut out with a circle punch.  Each cupcake topper has one of the Wizard of Oz characters on it...Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, Glinda the Good Witch, and the Wicked Witch.

Quick, Creamy Chicken Chilaquiles

I am not overly fond of spicy Mexican type dishes, especially those that use salsa.  However, every-once-in-awhile, I find one that I want to try.  This recipe came from the back of a Kraft Mexican Style Queso Quesadilla Cheese package.

Two things made me want to try this recipe.   I had some cooked chicken on hand and also some bits and pieces of tortilla chips leftover from making nachos for hubby for lunch.  The dish  takes less than 20 minutes to prepare which makes it a great weeknight dinner.

I added onions, red peppers and frozen corn to make the recipe more of a one-dish meal.  Since I am a wimp when it comes to heat and did not have any mild salsa on hand (hubby is the salsa eater, and he likes medium), I used half medium salsa and half mild Picante Sauce.

The original recipe called for 3 c. of crushed tortilla chips.  I had only 2 c. on hand, and that amount worked fine.

To save money and calories, in the future I will use only 1 c. to 1 1/2 c. of cheese.  The full 2 cups was a bit of overkill to me.  If you cannot find the Queso Quesadilla cheese, I am sure that Mexican Blend Cheese or Cheddar cheese would work instead.  If I was making this for a potluck or just for me, I would add some sliced ripe olives (hubby doesn't like olives).

All in all, we both liked this dish, and it will go into my regular lunch/dinner rotation.

I wonder, am I the only one who still makes recipes found on food packages?


Quick, Creamy Chilaquiles
1 T. vegetable oil
1/2 c. chopped onions
1/2 c. chopped red peppers
1 c. frozen corn
1 1/2 c. salsa (I used half medium salsa and half mild Picante)
2 c. shredded, cooked chicken
2-3 c. coarsely crushed tortilla chips
1-2 c. shredded Queso Quesadilla Cheese, Mexican Cheese, or Cheddar cheese

Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet on medium high.  Add onion, red pepper and frozen corn.  Cook until onions are tender, about 5  to 10 minutes.  Add salsa and chicken.  Cook for about 5 minutes.  Add crushed tortilla chips and mix well.  Top with cheese.  Cover, cook on medium-low heat 3 minutes until cheese is melted.  Serve topped with sour cream, green onions, and more salsa if desired.  Makes 6 servings.

Softening Cream Cheese Quickly

  

 I am one of those people who often decides to make a recipe at the last minute.  Now the problem is that, I don't like to wait while things like butter and cream cheese soften to room temperature.  In the past, I have used the microwave to speed things up, but that creates the risk of melting not softening.

Recently I learned of a way to soften cream cheese quickly and easily.  Just put the cream cheese in a zip top bag.  Zip the bag shut squeezing out as much air as possible, then place the bag of cream cheese in hot water.  Depending on the amount of cream cheese, it will soften in just a few minutes.  You can squeeze the bag as it softens to help the cheese soften faster.  In the photo I was softening 4 oz. of cream cheese, and it took about 10 minutes.  When the cream cheese has softened, I cut the bag open with kitchen scissors and scrape the cream cheese into the mixing bowl with a spatula.I have used this idea several times now, and I think it works very well.

Cookie Making Made Easy My Busy-Mom-Method

In the early 1970s, when I was very young and with small children to care for, I had a few cookie recipes I would make very often, because they were simple recipes, with ingredients I usually had at hand. Cookies are a terrific snack, don't require utensils to pick up and eat and can be made ahead for a party. However, even with all that, they are just not my favorite things to make, because they need to be made either by dropping individually onto the baking sheet, rolling out and cutting (making a mess on the counter and more cleanup), or the often added step of having to chill the dough before working. I like immediacy. I want to mix up a recipe, bake it, clean up and be done.

One morning I made a batch of these cookies, finally popped the last pan in the oven, and set the timer. Itching to get outside for a bit and see what the children were doing, I went out . . . and got distracted. By the time I remembered the cookies in the oven, they had burnt and shrunken down to tiny little black hockey pucks - not even the dogs had any interest in them! It pays not to get distracted when baking. This was the last straw. I had to think of a better way.

I came up with a brilliant idea that I call my "Busy-Mom-Method"; one I use to this day. Rather than take the time to make all the individual cookies by batches, with separate baking times (and time to get distracted), I would roll the cookie dough directly onto a greased baking sheet, working it evenly to the edges and baking it as one large cookie. It is best to use a baking sheet that has three open sides, as it is simpler to maneuver the rolling pin and get the cookie rolled evenly. Keep in mind also, that a little more flour may be needed in the dough to allow for lifting it out and forming into a rough rectangle for rolling. Also, a little extra flour over the surface while rolling helps to keep the rolling pin from sticking. Try not to add any more flour than absolutely necessary, or the cookies will come out denser and harder.

It takes a few minutes more in the oven with one large cookie, but it comes out perfectly. Just watch for the edges to be golden, and the center to be set. With these cookies, I also make a simple icing that is just 1½ cups of confectioners' sugar, a pinch of salt, ½ teaspoon of vanilla and enough water or milk to make a relatively thick consistency (very slow to fall from the spoon). Spread this over the hot cookie straight from the oven. The hot cookie warms the icing, making it melt and spread easily, using the back of the same spoon I used to mix the icing. I am all for less cleanup! Once the cookie cools, the icing dries and hardens, and I just cut the large cookie into small bar or square shapes, and voila; cookies in half the time! Two of my favorite recipes for this method were Hermits and Simple Vanilla Cookies. If you are a busy mom, try this method with any simple cookie dough. The Hermit cookies had raisins in them, but the thickness of the dough was no less than the thickness of the raisins, so it still worked well.

Simple Vanilla Cookies

Makes about 7 dozen

1 cup unsalted butter

2/3 cup sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 teaspoon salt

2 eggs

2¾ cups all-purpose flour

Cream butter, shortening and sugar. Add vanilla and salt. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each. Stir in flour, mixing well. Drop from a teaspoon 2 inches apart on a greased cookie sheet. Flatten with floured, flat-bottomed glass. Bake in a 375 degree oven for 8 to 10 minutes. Remove immediately from pan.
